This is yet another story in the ‘What If’ series. Many stories these days are based on ‘What if’, and rightly so. Just because the story is not in this series doe not mean that the authors are not asking themselves ‘What If’. These stories will be on a grand scale, involving counties, worlds or the natural order of things.
Good Intentions
The call had gone out for a meeting of the council. The one who had called them together began. “They are doing it again.” said Keet. “They are seeking to harm us in a different way. They are returning the stricken to infect us.”
“How?” asked Thrum. Why do you think they would do this?
“I do not know why, who can make sense of their actions. They are disguising their voices to turn them back.”
The eldest one uttered sounds of dismay. “Why are they not satisfied with what they have? They still hunt us though we are no threat to them, there are not many of us left. Things that have no use or make us and ours sick are thrust upon us every day.”
Keet called for silence. “Let us not focus on old problems, what do we do about this one?”
It was quiet for a while. Finally Thrum said, “We must call and warn those close to those turned back that they are returning. By now the madness has taken those stricken and they will not have reason enough to stay away. We can only hope for them to receive a quick and merciful death before they infect others.”
The meet ended and the warning was sent out. They had done all they could, Fate was deciding things now.

Courtesy of KTBN. The mother and son Humpback whales were successfully returned to the open ocean today from 90 miles up the Sacramento river where they were found earlier in the week. Scientists are still baffled why whales will swim up rivers or beach themselves. “It is not like they are lost; whales have excellent sonar to be able to find their way.” Dr. Hans Zarkov said to reporters. “We have to keep rescuing the whales that do this. It’s our duty as fellow caring mammals.”
